Our ProductsVIDEO ON THE TOPIC: How to Cheat at Go-Karting - Car Boys
In an effort to join our community a little closer together, we started this Discord about nine months ago. Come join the fun! How can I get into karting while living in an apartment with no garage? I've been struggling with this question for years now, and really itching to get my fix. How do those of you living in apartments that have no garage figure things out? Is it even worth it? Why not use that money to go rental kart racing more often? Your starting budget is going to consume most of your first year.
For budget racing check out the LO class, affordable spec racing. It looks like these guys run the kart program or at least are invested in it at Utah Motorsports Complex.
They would certainly have some info. I talked to UMC about garage rental on their premises and they don't seem to have any for karts. They only have full size rental garages which would completely blow past my budget. I would have to store the kart and trailer at a nearby self-storage unit, along with whatever tools I need to work on it.
Msquared has storage solutions as well, but they're full last I asked them about that. I'd love to get into an LO I'll get in touch with msquared again and see if they can help me with my dilemma. FWIW, get a two bed room apt with an elevator and trade the car for a pickup. Trailerless Tuesday is a thing.
The only people that can easily do it on a budget already have the space, transport, and time and are looking for a tinkering hobby. I'm not entirely sure what CIK-style karts are, even after some googling. When I go karting at the outdoor track in Tooele, they look like LO karts with heavy bumpers and such, so they're way less nimble than a competition LO kart which I've rented from a local team at a higher cost a couple times.
Not sure where CIK-style karts fall in that range I'm still on the fence about whether to rent or invest more time and money into it. Renting is fine, but anytime I remember racing the much lighter Rotax, I remember why I want to invest more into this thing, even if I just get into LO's for now. It's karting or saving up for a Lotus Elise, and then I'd be looking at loans and stressing about where I parked it on the street. CIK karts are competition karts. CIK is a sanctioning body that sets the rules.
LO is run on CIK karts as well as sometimes those doofy Oval kart chassis with their weird hot rod bodywork. If you can rent a Rotax, stick with that. Buying is such a pain in the ass. So what you're saying is a BRZ is an excellent option as long as you completely change everything about it. But no, the Rotax thing was all the way down in Phoenix, and the cost was prohibitive 3-day experience including learning maintenance etc.
Storage and transport issues aside, these things are a money funnel. Oh, and forget racing, the cost between running a track toy kart and being race competitive are the difference between a dinghy and a yacht. There's so much I'm oblivious to! Thanks for all that info. It's not encouraging, but it's definitely helpful to have it, so I really appreciate your taking the time to share.
Can you show me links to places that rent sessions like what you're talking about just to get an idea? Or is that kind of thing more word-of-mouth? Everything I'm aware of in Utah rents the public karts I mentioned with the safety reinforcements, and I only know of one guy who rents his karts to people, and he charges by the day.
I don't think of myself as being in excellent shape, but it took a full day session in a Rotax for me to feel exhausted. Taking breaks makes a big difference, too. I've definitely done all day stuff while taking breaks, but if you're gunning it full tilt for 20 minutes you'll be pretty well spent by the end on a proper technical sprint track. Some tracks do it, some don't. If you know of an outdoor track that rents regular rentals, try talking to the management and proposing one or two either rugged body or CIK competition style karts for rent.
Offering faster rentals is a good way to get people to want to go to your track over others, and sometimes used ones go up for sale for less money if raw cost is the issue. I know NOLA Motorsports Park bought almost their entire fleet used and they have all sorts of rental options as a result. Also, I'm 5'5 and about lbs. Holy shit, we have nothing like that here in Utah! I don't know if they have the manpower or the interest in even considering incorporating those kinds of options in their lineup as they've had a lot of financial troubles since the track was built years and years ago in the last several years they've been fighting just to stay open over a very drawn out legal battle for ownership , but I'll see if I can talk to someone in management.
I see that a lot with the slow public karts I can't imagine the chaos and legal implications of those people driving much faster ones. You're definitely on the small side for sure. MG yellow is actually the grippier of the two, but when tires are used they can dropoff quite a bit.
Like I said, the biggest thing is the track design and how hard you drive it. Also, if this was a race school format, you weren't barnstorming flat out the whole time. I mean, can you say with honesty that you were driving a race-competitive lap time in it? A lot of people don't realize how much grip these things generate at full tilt and you have to run them that hard to get worn out like I'm describing.
It might be tough for a track with bad finances and moreover a legal battle. Is this the place? If not, that place looks like it could handle some expenditures, it seems well funded, but looks aren't always what they seem.
The other thing is having the knowledge to maintain it, and that might be tougher to find as someone that only knows 4 strokes might have some issues getting a 2 stroke right. Well, like I said, all tracks have some kind of qualification standards, be it a lap time or a trusted staff member evaluating them for acceptable skill and respect for a faster kart or a combination of both. They also usually run CIK-bodied karts in a seperate session at most of these tracks as they're more fragile and normal rentals are almost dangerous to run with the general public swerving around while these trailblaze twice as fast with little protection.
It can certainly be done, but it's almost more of a goodwill service than a money maker in most cases. At best it gets people talking about the track because they want to check out the faster karts.
Hey, MoobyNetTerminal, just a quick heads-up: seperate is actually spelled separate. You can remember it by -par- in the middle. Have a nice day! The parent commenter can reply with 'delete' to delete this comment.
That's the one! They had been running the place year-to-year, and I was hearing talks of the state tearing it down to move the prison in its place, far away from fast-developing suburbs. Maybe they already have them in the works. The track's story is like this: the guy who built the place died years ago, his kids didn't care to keep it going, I think it went to the state temporarily, a Chinese company decided to buy it, and then some legal something-or-other kept them from purchasing the facility successfully and dragged on for years.
That sale was finally successful last year in October, now they're working on expansion. Those tires must have been used, and on my first try they were also cold obviously, because man they were slippery! After getting acquainted with the track, the kart, the tires, talking to the instructor, etc, I was going as fast as I could on every lap, gradually bringing my times down seconds where I think I plateaued.
Whether that was race-competitive, I have no idea, because I was also the only student there. I guess karting is less popular here up north. I've also thought renting a self-storage thingy but as you say then you need a pickup or a trailer and i doubt you have two parking spaces available.
Karting submitted 8 months ago by iNeedMoreSpeed. Started racing rental karts in Belgium as a kid, raced a full day at Silverstone in a Caterham R, raced in Phoenix's Bondurant kart track in a Rotax CRG during a 3-day karting experience thing, and of course the various lap Ferrari and Lamborghini type stuff.
