Picking up on the need for a more detailed understanding of the end of life destinations for wool garments, research conducted by the International Wool Textile Organisation IWTO and partner Australian Wool Innovation AWI has found substantial evidence for positive environmental benefits stemming from the regular recycling and re-use of wool garments. Under this system, the mechanical recycling of wool knitwear yields fibres of sufficient length to be carded and re-spun into yarns of pure wool or of blends. These yarns are then converted back into knitwear, providing a cost-effective wool fibre supply in ideal closed loop setting — the ideal recycling path. Due to the high quality and durability of the wool fibre, wool garments are inherently suitable for re-use and recycling. The average life of a wool garment is years depending on use, compared to years for a typical cotton or synthetic garment. This inherent resilience along with durability and high quality make wool a valuable raw material.

Woolen American English or woollen Commonwealth English is a type of yarn made from carded wool. Woolen yarn is soft, light, stretchy, and full of air. It is thus a good insulator, and makes a good knitting yarn. Woolen yarn is in contrast to worsted yarn, in which the fibers are combed to lie parallel rather than carded, producing a hard, strong yarn. The woolen and worsted process both require that the wool and other similar animal fibers, cashmere , camel , etc.

Wool is the textile fiber obtained from sheep and other animals, including cashmere and mohair from goats , qiviut from muskoxen , from hide and fur clothing from bison , angora from rabbits , and other types of wool from camelids ; additionally, the Highland and the Mangalica breeds of cattle and swine , respectively, possess woolly coats. Wool consists of protein together with a small percentage of lipids. In this regard it is chemically quite distinct from the more dominant textile, cotton , which is mainly cellulose. Wool is produced by follicles which are small cells located in the skin. These follicles are located in the upper layer of the skin called the epidermis and push down into the second skin layer called the dermis as the wool fibers grow. Follicles can be classed as either primary or secondary follicles. Primary follicles produce three types of fiber: kemp , medullated fibers, and true wool fibers.

From the very beginning I was firmly committed to Shelter being a true woolen-spun 2-ply yarn. The texture, which to some degree always stays true to the look and feel of the animal's natural appearance, gets me every time. Before Shelter could be a reality or even a possibility , I knew that finding the right mill was absolutely crucial. The first unfortunate obstacle in the process made itself blatantly apparent right away: the number of remaining US mills equipped to spin Woolen are severely limited today -- few exist as the last bastions of a bygone era in US textile production. As a very quick summary, Worsted Spun preparation involves combing fibers of even length so that they face the same direction and are generally well-behaved -- imagine uniform spaghetti noodles laying side-by-side. When these fibers are spun they produce yarns that are smooth, durable, and often lustrous as a result of their compressed nature involving less captured air. These yarns tend to be heavier per-yard due to this compression and are known especially for durability and definition. By comparison, Woolen Spun preparation involves carding rather than combing , which creates a jumbled configuration of fibers -- imagine tumbleweeds in place of your spaghetti. When the fiber is spun, the resulting yarn holds an amazing amount of air within its unkempt tangles. Us sheep-lovers though, we have a very special place in our hearts for The Woolen. Harrisville is an historic mill town located in the Monadnock Highlands of New Hampshire.

For Karen Hostetler, wet wool smells like progress. On washdays at Mountain Meadow Wool the air is warm, steamy, and redolent of barnyard. Employees stand before six-foot-long troughs plunging dirty fleece into soapy water.

The author established and since its inception has been in charge of the first industrial school for boys and girls in Massachusetts. At an early date he recognized the need of special text-books to meet the demand of young people who are attending vocational schools. There are plenty of books written on textiles for technical school students and advanced workers.
As with many discoveries of early man, anthropologists believe the use of wool came out of the challenge to survive. In seeking means of protection and warmth, humans in the Neolithic Age wore animal pelts as clothing. Finding the pelts not only warm and comfortable but also durable, they soon began to develop the basic processes and primitive tools for making wool. By B.
