Those ubiquitous four-pound yellow paper bags emblazoned with the company logo are produced here at a rate of bags a minute, 24 hours a day, seven days a week during operating season. The United States makes about nine million tons of sugar annually, ranking it sixth in global production. A vast majority of that domestic sugar stays in this country, with an additional two to three million tons imported each year. It carried legacies in the documents that survive and the ideas that, both subconsciously and intentionally, frame its internal and external philosophies, projects, and repercussions. Its legacies, then and now, have been mediated through the people that shaped the school — the professors, students, trustees, administrators whose ideas and money paved the campus Columbia stands on today, as well as those whose labor literally and metaphorically built the school. I will tell the story of Columbia University through one individual — chemistry professor Charles Frederick Chandler It is the story of a private university, the story of New York City, and the story of a transnational system of profit, exploitation, and slavery. A student of chemistry at a time in which the field was only recently emerging, Chandler went to Germany to get his Ph. He became a tenured professor at the young age of 27, only one year after joining the college.

Lurking beneath the surface of its sweet image is a dark and deceptive underworld of private sugar trading, protected subsidization, and human sickness.

The Caribbean sugar industry is at a crossroads. Guyana, Belize, Jamaica and Barbados are currently in the process of determining whether a combination of tariffs, structural and operational reforms and the substitution of less refined plantation white sugar for use in the manufacturing sector, might just hold the answer to the resuscitation of the flailing sector. Harvested sugarcane. Since , regionally produced sugar has had to compete with foreign imports of refined white sugar from Guatemala, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico, typically used in the manufacture of food, and beverage products such as baked goods and sugary drinks. Regional manufacturers have been vehement that locally produced plantation white sugar is unsuitable for these uses. Today, more than two-thirds of the sugar consumed in the Caribbean originates from outside sources, displacing some , metric tons of regionally produced sugar. In April , the Caribbean Development Bank CDB funded a study to determine whether locally produced plantation white would be suitable for regional manufacturing. This was a huge victory for the SAC. These findings have opened a market for , tonnes per annum of plantation white sugar and cut extra-regional imports of refined sugar, of about , tonnes per year. Another hurdle that the sector will need to overcome is the high production cost of plantation white sugar, causing foreign sugar imports to be a more cost effective option.

Refined Sugar Production

Inside its humid and sticky walls, workers spent long days laboring over machines refining raw sugar from Caribbean plantations. But in , the machines stopped and workers laid off. For the next decade, the buildings sat still, quiet and empty—falling into disrepair, awaiting destruction.

No Organic Merchant sells white sugar or any products containing white sugar because it is a foodless food. It is It is touted as an energy food, but such sugar myths are propaganda and is misleading for there is ample evidence that white sugar robs the body of B vitamins, disrupts calcium metabolism and has a deleterious effect on the nervous system.

The factory complex is located just three kilometres from the coast, on a reclaimed land site. A whole new industrial area will be developed here, with excellent links to global trade routes. Here and there, new industrial plants are rising from the vast land-claimed expanses of sand. For the people who are going to work there, Dafeng Port already has places to live, eat and shop. Though many buildings on the industrial site are still empty, that will change once production starts. Construction of the new Dafeng Yinmore Sugar refinery is also progressing well. The imposing raw sugar silo is already in place: it has an 80 m diameter and stands a proud 40 m tall. The heart of the factory complex is a building that houses the core sugar refinery process, the so-called sugar house. At the end of the third quarter of , assembly of all BMA process stations started — another milestone in the project. Ranging from components for dissolving raw sugar to parts for evaporation and crystallisation, and to centrifugals and dryers, BMA has supplied almost all major machinery equipment and apparatus for the refinery process. Twelve batch pans were assembled first, in September.

I understand that under the terms of the bill which is under consideration there The amount of refined en ar imported from Cuba annually will amount to of raw sugar everywhere, labor in the refining industry will not be protected and that our policy should be one of building up work opportunities for our people at home.

At the heart of sugar refining

A sugar refinery is a refinery which processes raw sugar into white refined sugar or that processes sugar beet to refined sugar. Many cane sugar mills produce raw sugar, which is sugar that still contains molasses , giving it more colour and impurities than the white sugar which is normally consumed in households and used as an ingredient in soft drinks and foods. While cane sugar does not need refining to be palatable, sugar from sugar beet is almost always refined to remove the strong, usually unwanted, taste of beets from it. The refined sugar produced is more than 99 percent pure sucrose. Whereas many sugar mills only operate during a limited time of the year during the cane harvesting period, many cane sugar refineries work the whole year round. Sugar beet refineries tend to have shorter periods when they process beet but may store intermediate product and process that in the off-season. Raw sugar is either processed into white refined sugar in local refineries, and sold to the local industry and consumers, or it is exported and refined in the country of destination.
